The Watch Dog: Pet Food Recall 2

Another Pet Food Recall
by: Rover 411

As of September 12, 2008, some PEDIGREE® dry food products have been voluntary recalled by the manufacturer. Mars Petcare US announced the recall due to potential Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund contamination. The recall affects products shipped through the US manufactured at the Everson, PA facility between February 18, 2008 and July 29, 2008.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and/or have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. With mild salmonella infection, pets may only have decreased appetite, fever and/or abdominal pain. Animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and can potentially infect other animals or humans. Salmonella infection in children, elderly or people with compromised immune systems can cause serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Brand names involved in the recall include the following:

  • Country Acres
  • Ol' Roy
  • Paws & Claws
  • Pedigree
  • Pet Pride
  • PMI Nutrition
  • Red Flannel
  • Retriever
  • Wegman's Bruiser

If you have any of these products, check the code date to confirm that your product is included in the recall. Look for “17” as the first two digits on the second line of the UPS code like:

Best by Feb 18 09
17 1445

or the “PAE” on the bottom line like:

PEDIGREE ® Small Crunchy Bites
Best Before 02/2009
808G1PAE01 12:00

If the code date matches, check www.petcare.mars.com or call 1-877-568-4463 to determine if the specific UPC codes match.

If you believe you, your family and/or your pet has consumed or been in contact with the following recalled products and shows symptoms of infection, please contact your health care provider or veterinarian. Affected products can be returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Fore more information, visit www.petcare.mars.com.
