The Watch Dog: Hurricane Gustav

Hurricane Gustav Pets

According to the ASPCA’s website, within 7 hours of Hurricane Gustav hitting landfall, over 800 animals have been checked into the Louisiana Mega. The shelter is at capacity for human evacuees is at capacity, however the shelter for animals is still accepting evacuees’ pets. The ASPCA, along with the American Humane Association, currently is maintaining a 24-hour presence at the shelter. Along with dogs and cats, the shelter has also taken in rabbits, hamsters, birds, snakes and other reptiles. You can donate to the ASPCA by clicking here. In addition to the ASPCA, Best Friends Animal Society is rushing 3,000 animal carriers to New Orleans To support families encountering pet evacuation problems. Best Friends Animal Society is a veteran when it comes to disaster response, after helping to rescue more than 6,000 dogs and cats during Hurricane Katrina. Want to learn how to become a team member that helps animals in emergency situations? The National Animal Rescue and Sheltering Coalition (NARSC) has developed compliance requirements for organizing rapid response team member. Each team member must complete a series of courses through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Coursework is available at http://training.fema.gov. It is also recommend that team members have the following vaccinations and training:
