Doggie Tales: General Stories: Dog-Powered Scooter

Daisy and Retired New York Mets Pitcher Enjoy Walking Together with Dog-Powered Scooter

When Craig Swan, retired New York Mets pitcher, adopted Daisy, a pit bull-hound mix, he quickly realized the young pup needed more exercise than his 59-year-old body with a shaky leg could provide. Craig and his wife decided to search online for options. What they found not only helped Daisy relax, but also created a great pass time and bonding experience for Daisy and Craig.

What they found was a dog-powered scooter. The device is a non-motorized scooter with a special attachment that has a padded
harness that allows a dog to run alongside and pull the scooter and a seated human. There is a variety of dog-powered products available
worldwide including a folding bike and a skateboard, and some can be powered by up to 4 dogs at a time.

At first, Swan pushed the scooter a little to get it moving and sometimes while going uphill. Now, however, Swan guesses he and Daisy
are going about 20 mph in a full run. They are also looking for others who own a dog scooter in the Greenwich, CT area who are interested in participating in a club.

Although this product may be good outlet and exercise device for dogs, it may not be suitable for all dogs. One manufacturer recommends that their device be used for athletic, healthy dogs weighing at least 35 lbs.

If you are considering getting a dog powered scooter, or already have one, please check to make sure it is safe for the dog as well as the
human.
