New Addition: Family Addition

Family Addition
by: Julie T., Wisconsin

Statistics show that homeless pets are on the rise. With the economy in the toilet, some people have no choice but to leave behind or give up their best friends. Yet, if you are in the market to add another furry friend to your pack then there is no better time than now to do so. Most of these animals have nothing but an abundance of unconditional love and want nothing more than to be a part of a safe and loving home.

However, there is one rule that many families seem to forget: you need to include the entire household when picking a new pet—even Fido. It is imperative to find the dog that best fits the ENTIRE family. Adding a second dog can be a challenge if you already have pets in your home, but even Cesar Milan has said you MUST include the dog. It’s unfair to selfishly pick out a new pet because it’s “cute” or “what you always wanted” without taking into consideration how that new pet will fit into your family. In all actuality, it should be left up to the dog to pick its new partner in crime. What many folks don’t realize is that there has to be a common understanding between dogs in their doggie-dog world about who is going to be boss dog. And once you encounter the household harmony that comes from this kind of canine pact, you will be glad you let your current pet have a say in which new furry friend joined the family.

Go ahead, see what’s available. There are PLENTY of adoption groups that are overflowing with animals. Check your city pounds, local shelters, rescue groups and the humane society. And make sure to insist your current pet meets some of the available pets you are considering. It will make the transition to your home smooth and less stressful for the people in the house as well. Because just like a piece of a puzzle, once you find the right one, it fits perfectly.
