Dog Health: Spay and Neuter Benefits

Get Fido “fixed” for a healthier, happier, more sociable pet
by: Linda Walsh, Nooters Club, Michigan

Getting your dog “fixed” is good for you and your pet. A dog that is spayed (female) or neutered (male) is a healthier, happier more sociable pet. They are less likely to roam, get in fights and mark or spray their territory. There are many reasons to get your pet spayed or neutered.

"Fixed" pets are healthier. They . . .

  • Live longer, healthier lives.
  • Have fewer health problems, including some that are serious.
  • Do not get uterine or ovarian cancer in females.
  • Have fewer occurrences of breast cancer in females.
  • Do not get testicular cancer in males.
  • Have fewer occurrences of prostate disease in males.

"Fixed” pets are more sociable. They . . .

  • Are more affectionate companions.
  • Are less likely to spray and mark territory.
  • Do not go into a heat cycle, during which females can cry and attract males.
  • Have fewer behavior and temperment problems.
  • Are less likely to roam, run away or get into fights.

In addition, when you get your pet spayed or neutered, you are also benefitting the community by helping to end the suffering of helpless and homeless dogs. Each year, millions of healthy cats, dogs and other pets are euthanized. On average, about 65% of all animals that end up in shelters are euthanized.
