Ask the Expert: Massage: Becoming A Massage Therapist

Q & A - Becoming a Massage Therapist
by: Debbie, Michigan

Q: Hey Rover, congrats on the website's continued success!! I was reading about Theresa, and she is doing what I have always dreamed of doing with animals! Being a previous vet-tech and massage therapist, my original idea (years ago) was to be an animal massage therapist. My life took me in other directions, however. Now I find myself longing to follow through with my original dream. I'd like to ask Theresa what she recommends in terms of education, etc. to help guide to fulfill my dream.

A: Hi Debbie, You sound like you have the best possible background knowledge any instructor could ask for. I attended the Pet Massage Training and Research Institute in Toledo, Ohio, www.petmassage.com The owner/operator is Jonathon Rudinger, a registered nurse and licensed massage therapist. I took the on-line foundation course first, then attended the Institute for 50 hours of hands-on training. I am a registered professional member of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork, the Hands-On Trade Association of Bodywork & Massage Professionals, and the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. I am insured and bonded. There is no mechanism for licensing canine massage providers in the state of Michigan at this time, however, there is a movement underway to create a national certification program that will be recognized across the nation. Hope this helps, if not, please contact me again if I can assist.
