Q & A - Greyhound Favoring Rear Leg
by: Justin, Wisconsin
Q: My dog Willow is a retired greyhound racer. As he ages, I have noticed he favors one of his back legs. Mornings seem to be the worst for him. Can you recommend some massage techniques to comfort him?
A: First, take Willow to your veterinarian to make sure there's not something serious going on. If your vet OK's it, then a gentle massage of the legs will help ease Willow's discomfort. Start at the hip and manipulate the leg muscles all the way to the toes. Watch out for the vein that runs along the inside of the thigh - work on either side of it, but do not put any direct pressure on the vein. Flex the legs at the hip, knee and ankle joints. Stand next to Willow and stretch each leg backwards (one at a time!) supporting it at the knee. Hold for a short time then move over to the other leg and repeat. An all-over massage using a firm, but not harsh, touch will also stimulate tired muscles and help ease aches and pains.
