Ask the Expert: Holistic: Scratching

Q & A - Scratching

Q: Our 3 year old lhasa apso, Bella, seems to be scratching endlessly. We bath her a couple of times per week, and groom her every 3-5 weeks. There doesn't seem to be any redness or flakiness anywhere. What can we do to help her?
- Shawn in MI.

A: This is likely allergies. While my book, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, provides a lot of detailed information on how to help Bella, here are a few thoughts to get you started. Supplements such as fatty acids and antioxidants are very helpful. Your veterinarian can recommend favorite products, or you can find many on my website, www.petcarenaturally.com. A wholesome natural diet, free of byproducts and chemicals, will reduce inflammation and itchiness in her body. A few of the brands I like include California Naturals, Inova, and Nature's Variety. Herbs and homeopathic remedies can also be helpful, and consulting with a holistic veterinarian will get you started in the right direction. Finally, frequent bathing, even daily if needed, is very important in removing the
allergens from Bella’s skin and hair, which will reduce her itchiness. I'll recommend one of the shampoos in my new line of certified organic shampoos, Dr. Shawn’s Pet OrganicsTM called Aloe and Lavender Itch Relief Shampoo. It is designed for frequent use and will help heal and soothe her itchy skin. You can also find it at www.petcarenaturally.com.
