Ask the Expert: Dog Communicator: Animals Understand Words?

Q & A - Understanding Words

Q: Do animals understand words? I have some friends who say they don't. I do animal reiki at a local shelter and feel in my heart that they were listening to every word I was saying.

Thank you,
Shelly H

A: Tell your friends YES! Animals absolutely understand words. Some of it is by word association, like saying the word 'treat' and then they get a treat. Other times they understand our words by the images that flash in our minds. For instance, if you are thinking about taking your dog for a walk, he may get all excited and run to the door even before you say anything or get his leash. How does he know? He has simply tuned in to your thoughts. As we think or speak out loud, we form images in our minds that flash like mini movies or pictures. Animals are very good at picking up these images and understanding them. Thank you Shelly for the wonderful work you do for shelter animals.

Blessings,
Karen
